Definitions: Consumer

The following are a handful of terms used by disability advocates when speaking about individuals with mental illness and the quality of mental health care they receive. When I heard each for the first time myself, I had to track down the definitions and have since heard many more advocates ask regarding the same.

For each term, some of which are used regularly within Six. Almost Seven.., I have found what I think is an appropriate, easy-to-read link from various recognizable sources across the Internet.

What is a consumer?

A consumer is a person who has received or is receiving mental health care or addiction [treatment] services.

Definition source: Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA)..

What is a primary consumer?

Primary consumer is a more specific term descriptive of the person who is actually receiving mental health care or addiction treatment services.

Definition source: First heard primary consumer defined and used during a ADS Center, Resource to Address Discrimination and Stigma teleconference (www.stopstigma.samhsa.gov/archtel.htm)..

What is a secondary consumer?

A secondary consumer would be someone like the family member of a (primary) consumer who is receiving mental health care or addiction treatment services. This is not the person actually receiving the services. They could otherwise be considered as the person once removed from and having a direct vested interest in the (primary) consumer who is receiving mental health care or addiction treatment services.

Definition source: First heard secondary consumer defined and used during a ADS Center, Resource to Address Discrimination and Stigma teleconference (www.stopstigma.samhsa.gov/archtel.htm)..

Always more to learn..

Since it is the general nature of language to evolve as communication and, more importantly, awareness of self does, there will always be other terms and definitions to learn..
