Addressing Stigma

To be an effective advocate or self-advocate, one needs to make the best use possible of available tools and support resources. The following are just a handful of suggestions for places to turn for information during one's own advocacy efforts..

ADS Center (HHS)

With a slogan of Bridging the gap between where we are and where we need to be, HHS, SAMHSA, and CMHS are diligently, and in this survivor's opinion very successfully, working to eradicate stigma through ADS Center, Resource Center to Address Discrimination and Stigma (www.stopstigma.samhsa.gov). ADS Center's information is being provided to help individuals design, implement and operate their own programs related to maybe one day eliminating the discrimination and stigma associated with mental illnesses. While specifically focused on stigma as it applies to mental illness (MI), the free teleconferences provided through ADS Center regularly address talking points quite applicable to persons of all disabilities.
